Searching for One Cup on Jonaizaka Street

The pottery shops along Jonaizaka Street were busy that afternoon.

People stepped in and out of one store after another, holding bowls, turning cups over in their hands, putting them back, and moving on to the next doorway.

Outside every shop, rows of pottery caught the November sunlight.
Cups, plates, and bowls in countless shapes and colors reflected the light with a quiet glow.
There was no single style.
Some pieces looked refined, others rough, but together they formed a rhythm that stretched the length of the street.

I found myself thinking that Mashiko ware did not seem made for special occasions.

It felt more at home beside an ordinary morning coffee.
A mug that would not mind if you left it on your desk overnight before washing it the next day.
A cup meant to become part of everyday life rather than something carefully saved for guests.

Still, I was searching for something slightly different.

I wanted a cup that invited both hands.
One that made me want to wash it carefully each evening before putting it back on the shelf.
Something whose appearance alone could quietly gather memories over the years.

Then, between the pottery shops, I noticed a place that looked less like a store than someone’s grandfather’s house.

A few cups and plates sat outside on a small patch of ground, almost apologetically, as if they had wandered there by accident.

It drew me in immediately.

The pottery shone in the same sunlight as everything else along the street.

Although they were displayed outdoors, I found myself imagining the unseen potter gently brushing away the dust each morning before arranging them.
That small imagined ritual somehow stayed with me longer than the pottery itself.

“I wonder if there’s something a little more earthy,” I murmured to myself.

Then I started walking again.
